Programs and Services
Getting recommended screenings is one of the most important things you can do for your health.
Routine health screenings can help identify diseases before they cause significant health concerns like heart disease and stroke; diabetes and certain cancers; kidney and thyroid disease and even gastrointestinal and nutritional disorders.
Why should I have a health screening?
Improve Health—Understanding current health and the lifestyle habits that contribute to health status can make a meaningful difference.
Identify Illness Early—Studies show that up to 90% of high-cost medical claims stem from preventable health conditions.
Lower Risk and Cost—Routine health screenings and assessments result in risk reduction and lower medical claims.
Increase Attendance—Healthy and informed employees miss fewer days of work each year.
Increase Productivity—When you feel well, you function at a higher productivity level.
The Christian Brothers Employee Benefit Trust partners with Empower Health Services (EHS) to help participants realize their wellness potential and place them in control of health and wellness goals.
EHS supplies a convenient, cost-effective way for you to receive preventative care. Not only does EHS find health risks, but also provides a better understanding of wellness. All participants will receive a report covering health risks, potential causes and suggested next steps. In addition, EHS provides you with actionable data designed to improve health and productivity.
For instance, in the screening of 639 total participants in 2022, 204 were identified as at risk for metabolic syndrome and 15 had critical calls.
For those with metabolic syndrome, individuals identified with at least three risk factors such as elevated glucose, hypertension, or a low HDL cholesterol. Such factors can lead to high-risk health concerns such as diabetes, kidney failure and heart disease. In fact, research shows that an abnormal cholesterol ratio reading is the most suggestive sign of a future cardiac event.
Empower Health’s AI has been designed to identify people who may need immediate attention from their primary care physicians. The Empower Wellness Screening Program is designed to provide you with a better understanding of your overall health. After participating in a screening program, you will receive a personalized lab report that includes your screening results, test information, and reference ranges based on age and gender. You can securely and confidentially view your results online two to three days after your screening by visiting mycbs.org/health and selecting Empower Health Services, located under “My Wellness.”
Participants with critically out- of-range results will receive a call from a EHS nurse within 36 hours of obtaining their report.
What will be discussed during this phone call?
During this call, a nurse will let you know of any critical results, provide information on the applicable tests, and discuss the necessity of sharing results with your primary care physician. The importance of taking prescribed medications, monitoring diet, and managing diabetes (if applicable) are also reviewed. If you previously participated in an EHS screening, a nurse will also review previous results. Additionally, the nurse will provide instruction on accessing your results online through the empower.health portal, and walk you through securely faxing these results to your primary care physician if you so choose. If necessary, the nurse can fax your lab report for you if you provide your primary care physician's fax number.
What is the critical call outreach process?
The nurse will call three times (once daily) until the participant is reached. If the participant is not reached by phone, a mailed letter will be sent to the individual's home address, describing the importance of sharing results with their primary care physician, along with their lab report. EHS tracks all calls made and letters sent in case a participant should contact us at a later date to follow up.
Once logged into EHS, participants also can access helpful health content from their Dashboard under the “Resources” tool, including a lifestyle evaluation; educational wellness content; monthly webinars and videos from nationally-certified health coaches on a range of topics; and access to blog articles on health.

One in six adults 18 or older has hearing loss. It’s common. The good news is that it's also treatable. The better news is that treating hearing loss improves more than just hearing. People who treat their hearing loss can look forward to being more engaged and socially active.
Furthermore, better hearing helps people feel safe, healthy and independent. Christian Brothers Employee Benefit Trust (CBEBT) provides all members access to Start Hearing, which offers tremendous discounts on the latest hearing aid technology.
Hearing loss has a ripple effect that may easily impact the quality of life — emotionally, physically, and mentally. Not being able to hear the world around you may lead to feelings of isolation, which may lead to depression, moments of embarrassment, or trigger anxiety.
Additionally, adults with hearing loss are up to five times more likely to experience cognitive decline.
Loss of hearing may lead to physical complications like an increased risk of falling and accidental injuries, as well as other medical complications due to not clearly hearing and understanding medical instructions.

Dedicated to making better hearing accessible to everyone, Start Hearing provides significant discounts on prescription hearing aids obtained through its 3,000 nationwide network of providers, as well as over-the-counter hearing aids suitable for those with perceived mild to moderate hearing loss.
