Taking care of our emotional health and supporting each other is a powerful tool of living healthy, balanced and fulfilled lives.
As May is Mental Health Awareness Month, sobering statistics begin to emerge. About one in four people suffer from a diagnosable mental health concern in a given year. Yet, only 43 percent of adults with a mental health disorder seek treatment to address it.
In addition, mental wellness becomes indicative of our overall health. Suffering emotionally often leads to severe problems such as heart failure, substance abuse, tobacco-related illness, and a variety of conditions brought on by undue stress and anxiety.
Mental health has a long history of being misunderstood and there is a stigma associated with its diagnosis. Fortunately, we are beginning to make large strides to change that, with treatment options and counseling services in place to address barriers affecting one’s daily lifestyle.
The number of people looking for help with anxiety and depression increased by 93% in 2020. The Christian Brothers Services Employee Benefit Trust, in recognizing the importance of mental health and the need for additional services, will be expanding behavioral health services within its offered programs beginning mid year.
