The rise of online training programs has dramatically expanded access to safety information. With employees increasingly working from remote locations, online training programs are more important than ever, and few employers can afford to not use some form of online training.
Results of the 2021 Training Survey, conducted by Safety+Health magazine, show 57% of the 345 respondents reporting they are using a virtual classroom or webcast training as at least one of their delivery methods. That is up from 26% of the 473 respondents in the 2020 survey. Similarly, the percentage of respondents who said they used online or computer-based training increased to 78 from 66 in 2020.
The benefits of online safety training and education are hard to ignore. They include:
Cost. Online training tends to be significantly more affordable than in-person programs, especially once we factor in opportunity costs, like employee time.
Always available. Employees can complete training courses wherever they are located and at any time. This ensures it can fit around employee responsibilities and is important for remote workers.
Auditable engagement. A good online course includes usage tracking to ensure employees are engaged and learning. Metrics can give concrete means of verifying compliance.
Consistency. A good program has a consistent message across the entire organization. When everyone hears the same advice, they can help each other.
Repetition. Programs can be made available for refresher courses, allowing the organization to ensure that important principles stay fresh in employees’ minds.
Specialty topics. Some businesses need specific training but trainers are either expensive or hard to schedule. An online course can serve as a replacement.
